Review – Destiny

September 24th, 2014 by

Destiny_logoBecome Legend. That is what Bungie did when creating the epic Halo series, and now they challenge themselves and us to do the same in their brand new highly anticipated game, Destiny.  Bungie has set the bar high, not only settling to create just another first person shooter, but to create a gaming experience which will last the next ten years. To accomplish this feat they are attempting to create a hybrid of the successful MMO formula and the graphics and gameplay they are renown for. (more…)

Review – Valiant Hearts: The Great War

July 7th, 2014 by

valiant_hearts_thumbVideogames and war have gone together since the very beginning of the medium, like peanut butter and jelly. We’ve been so obsessed with all types of war; past, present, future, and beyond but the biggest obsession has been World War 2. That’s what makes Valiant Hearts such a welcome breath of fresh air; it is based during the First World War. Equally refreshing is the almost complete lack of any type of gunplay at all. Valiant Hearts is a platformer imbued with a diverse number of puzzles to solve around each corner. It is a stylish and genuine journey more concerned with demonstrating how people are affected by the tragedies of war rather than displaying the violence constantly. (more…)

Review – Watch_Dogs

July 2nd, 2014 by

watch_dogs-thumbWatch_Dogs has had a bit of a roller coaster ride leading up to its eventual launch this past May.  When its first trailer was revealed at E3 in 2012, the reception was incredible for this new IP, and people already couldn’t wait for the game’s November 2013 release.  It was also later revealed that it would be a launch title for both the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One.  Unfortunately, the game was unable to meet that deadline, as Ubisoft deemed the game still needed polishing.  With the finalized release date in question for quite some time, Ubisoft revealed that the game would launch on May 27th, 2014, but gamers were skeptical.  On may 14th, Watch_Dogs had gone gold, and now it was time to see if the public was going to get what they had been so anxiously waiting for. Review – Batman: Arkham Origins Cold Cold Heart DLC

April 29th, 2014 by

cold_cold_heart_logoBatman: The Animated Series holds a very special place in my heart – it was my first real introduction to the character during my childhood. From the very first time I saw Batman, Gotham City, and the Batmobile, I knew I was hooked. There were dozens of amazing stories told throughout the course of that series, but one that always stood out to me was Heart of Ice. The story tells the origin of one of the great Batman villains: Mr. Freeze. Without giving any of the story details away, I will say that the Batman: Arkham Origins DLC, titled Cold Cold Heart, does a fantastic job of creating an entertaining and self-contained adventure out of that classic tale from my childhood. Review – Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

March 17th, 2014 by

maxresdefaultIn 2010, I returned to Castlevania, a series of video games I enjoyed from my youth. The legacy and history of the long running series was being updated and brought to the Playstaion 3 and Xbox 360 by game studio Mecurysteam, with input from legendary game designer Hideo Kojima. That game was Castlevania Lords of Shadow, and it was an epic tale that told the origin of the Belmont curse and the birth of the Dragon, Dracula.  Now, four years later, the sequel arrived and I could not wait to sink my teeth into it. Review – South Park: The Stick Of Truth

March 4th, 2014 by

south_park_thumbEver since day one of its announcement, I have been excited for South Park: The Stick of Truth. However, it’s been a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride ever since.  The original publisher, THQ, was met with unfortunate circumstances and had to file for bankruptcy, leaving the fate of the cartoon RPG in limbo.  Luckily for South Park fans everywhere, Ubisoft saw promise in the game, and decided to take on the project.  After months of public uncertainty as to the release date, it was finally announced that the title would launch for the 2013 holiday season!  I even got to preview some of the gameplay footage at FanExpo in August, which made me even more anxious for the game.  Disappointment struck again when a trailer was released stating the title’s launch would now be delayed until March 2014.  Despite several setbacks, I hadn’t lost faith that a stellar product would be the end result, and all I can say is, it was definitely worth the wait. Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments Gets An Announce Trailer

January 31st, 2014 by

sherlock-holmes-crimes-and-punishment-logoOne of the world’s greatest (fictional) detectives has a new game coming out this year, and just yesterday, developers Frogwares gave us the first official full length trailer to prove it.  Not that it needed proof, but it did need a trailer!  Looking darker than one might expect for the character, it also seems to retain the wit that one would expect as well.  Crimes & Punishments is the seventh installment in the series, but is the first to be built on Unreal Engine 3 technology, allowing for a vastly upgraded experience in almost every possible way.  It is also a previous generation (Xbox 360 / PS3) and PC exclusive, so don’t unplug those paperweights we use to call consoles just yet. Review – AC4: Freedom Cry DLC

January 7th, 2014 by

Assassins-Creed-4-Freedom-Cry-DLC-LogoAssassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag gave us one of the franchise’s most charismatic protagonists to date in the form of Edward Kenway.  However, Kenway wasn’t the only hero we were introduced to – we also got to meet Kenway’s right-hand man, Adewale.  Throughout the on-disc campaign, Adewale could be counted on to be the voice of reason when Kenway’s motives may have become less than ethical.  Well, in the game’s first campaign-based DLC, Freedom Cry, Adewale is the star, telling his story of the events that followed his time with Edward Kenway. Review – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

November 5th, 2013 by

black-flagSince I dove into the Assassin’s Creed franchise several years ago, whenever I finished one the games, I couldn’t wait for the next one to come out.  The elaborate Ezio trilogy and how his experiences impacted Desmond’s present day life was a form of story telling that completely drew me in.  A year later we were introduced to Connor, and how he joined the assassins to defend his native land.  Now, in AC4, we get the chance to play as the charming, yet ruthless pirate, Captain Edward Kenway.  AC3 introduced us to naval combat in the series, and with Black Flag focusing on pirates, you can guess that open-sea combat would be a big factor. Review – Batman: Arkham Origins

October 29th, 2013 by

Batman_Arkham_Origins_ArtBatman: Arkham Origins is the third installment in the ‘Arkham’ series of games and the first game to be developed by Warner Brothers Montreal, not the original creators Rocksteady Studios. It is usually a very touch-and-go process when a licensed game is handed off to a new development team, and this game proves to be no different. While it does contain all of the elements that made the first two games in the series a success, it fails to innovate on them in any major way. (more…)
